Our history

Our history

Founded in 1966 on the recommendation of the Commission of Enquiry on Mental Illness, our original mission was to develop local voluntary arrangements to provide support and befriending to persons with a mental illness, their families and carers by identifying their needs, advocating their rights, and promoting positive mental health to the general population.

MHI has been an innovator in the promotion of mental health in Ireland for almost half a century. We are now at the point of refocusing our mission and regenerating our activity to support our new vision; for an Ireland where mental health is valued as being an essential part of personal wellbeing and the health of the nation. MHI will lead the way in informing Irish society’s understanding of mental health and fostering a culture where people with mental health difficulties are respected and supported.
