Welcome back! This week I’d like to share with you how I deal with panic attacks.
Sometimes I wake up in a panic, either in the middle of the night or in the morning. My psychiatrist thinks this might be due to nightmares, which I don’t remember.
The way I deal with this situation is that I sit on the edge of the bed with both feet planted firmly on the ground. I put my face in my hands and breathe quickly at first slowing down gradually until I am taking deep breaths and relaxing. This helps with what Recovery International refer to as “air-hunger”.
Also, I say prayers while I’m doing this, to focus my mid and stop it thinking negative thoughts. If this isn’t for you it can work just as well repeating positive affirmations.
Within a matter of a few minutes I am usually back to normal again.
I hope this is of some help.
Til next time!
